This monument to the Katyn forest massacre stands outside the small church of St Giles at the bottom of Wawel hill in Krakow. Around 1940 Stalin ordered the execution of 25,700 Polish personnel taken prisoner when the Soviets invaded Poland in support of the Nazis, 4000 of these were buried in the Katyn forest.
